MacBook Battery Draining Fast? Let AI Find the Likely Culprit

The problem

Your MacBook used to last much longer, but now the battery seems to disappear. There are many possible reasons: a demanding app, lots of browser tabs, video calls, cloud syncing, background activity, screen brightness, an app that is stuck doing work, normal heavy use, or battery condition or age. The difficult part is knowing where to start. Instead of changing ten settings at once, show AI the evidence and ask it to identify what stands out.

Safety first

DO NOT START REMOVING APPS OR CHANGING SYSTEM SETTINGS JUST BECAUSE ONE NUMBER LOOKS HIGH. Energy use changes depending on what the Mac is doing. An app using lots of power during a video call, photo processing, file syncing, software updates or video export may be completely normal. Do not delete unknown macOS processes, disable security features, disable system services blindly, install "battery cleaner" or "booster" software, reset low-level Mac settings as a first step, or replace the battery based only on screenshots. This tutorial is diagnosis first. Activity Monitor may reveal the names of apps you use, and battery screenshots may also show recent usage information — if an app name or other visible detail is sensitive, crop or cover it before uploading. If macOS itself reports that the battery condition needs attention, that is different from simply seeing high energy usage; follow Apple's current battery/service guidance rather than asking AI to diagnose battery hardware from a screenshot.

Steps

  1. Open Activity Monitor. Look at the Energy section. Take a screenshot showing the apps using the most energy.
  2. Open the Mac’s battery settings. Take another screenshot showing useful battery information if available, such as battery level/history, condition/health wording, recent battery use, or energy-related recommendations. If your Mac does not show all of these, one useful screenshot is enough.
  3. Attach the screenshots to ChatGPT or Claude.
  4. Paste the supplied prompt.
  5. Read MY FIRST 3 BATTERY CHECKS. Start with apps and behaviour you recognise. For example, Activity Monitor might show a video meeting app at very high energy use, Safari at moderate/high use and a cloud sync app active in background — the video meeting app is likely using substantial power while the call is active, Safari may contribute if many tabs are open, and the cloud sync app may be using energy because files are currently uploading or downloading. This does not prove anything is broken: if the battery drains mainly during calls and syncing, the usage may be expected. By contrast, if one app remains near the top of the Energy list even when you are not actively using it, that may deserve investigation — check whether it is syncing, updating or processing something, close and reopen the recognised app if appropriate, and watch whether its energy use settles afterward. Do not start deleting apps or changing unfamiliar system settings. Energy use is a snapshot: an app may temporarily rise to the top because it is doing legitimate work. A better clue is something that stays unusually active while the battery is draining and while you are not expecting it to be busy. Battery drain is not caused only by apps — screen brightness, connected devices, video playback, calls, games and other demanding work can also reduce battery life, so consider the whole pattern rather than blaming the first app you see.

What success looks like

Before: your MacBook battery is dropping quickly and you do not know what is causing it. After: you understand which visible apps are using the most energy, whether the usage may be expected, whether an app appears unusually active, and what 1–3 things deserve checking first. Example result: finish or pause a large cloud sync and compare battery use, check whether a recognised app stays active when it should be idle, and reduce obviously heavy usage temporarily and see whether battery drain improves. Nothing important has been deleted or disabled.
