Mac Storage Full? Ask AI What’s Taking Up Space
Take a screenshot of your Mac storage screen and ask AI to explain which categories are using the most space and what you should investigate first.
The problem
Your Mac says storage is almost full. You may see categories such as Applications, Documents, Photos, macOS and System Data, but still have no idea what to do next. Instead of randomly deleting files, take a screenshot of the storage screen and ask AI to explain what you are looking at. This tutorial helps you understand the problem first. It does NOT delete anything.
What you need
- A Mac
- ChatGPT or Claude
- A screenshot of the Mac storage screen — open your Mac’s storage settings and take a screenshot showing the storage categories and available space
Safety first
DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING YET. The purpose of this tutorial is to understand what is taking up space. A large category does not automatically mean it is safe to remove. macOS and System Data can include important system files. Applications may contain files required by software. Personal documents and photos may be irreplaceable. AI should explain and prioritise; it should not tell you to blindly delete system folders. System Data can be confusing — it may include caches, logs, temporary data, support files and other items managed by macOS or applications. A large System Data number does not mean you should manually delete random system folders. We will cover System Data specifically in a separate tutorial later.
Copy-paste prompt
I have attached a screenshot of my Mac storage screen. Please explain it to me in very simple language. Tell me: 1. which storage categories are using the most space; 2. what each large category usually contains; 3. which category I should investigate first; 4. which categories I should be especially careful with; 5. what I can safely CHECK next without deleting anything. Steps
- Open your Mac storage view. Take a screenshot that clearly shows total storage, free/available storage and the main storage categories.
- Attach the screenshot to ChatGPT or Claude.
- Paste the supplied prompt.
- Read only the MY FIRST 3 THINGS TO CHECK section first. The goal is to decide what deserves investigation. Do not start deleting files yet. For example, a storage screen showing Applications — 48 GB, Documents — 32 GB, Photos — 21 GB, System Data — 55 GB and Available — 9 GB might produce: largest category is System Data at 55 GB, but do not manually delete System Data files; first practical checks are large Applications, Downloads and Documents, and old device backups or other clearly identifiable files. These exact categories are not universal — every Mac is different.
What success looks like
Before: your Mac says storage is nearly full and you do not know where to start. After: you understand which categories are largest, which categories may be easier to investigate, and which categories should not be touched casually. You have a simple 3-item investigation list. Important: nothing has been deleted.
If it goes wrong
Your answer is too broad. Please look only at the storage categories shown in my screenshot. Tell me: 1. the largest category; 2. the second largest category; 3. the safest category for me to investigate first; 4. one thing I should NOT touch without understanding it. Do not give deletion instructions. Keep the answer under 200 words.
