Mac System Data Too Large? Ask AI What to Check First

The problem

You open Mac storage and see a huge category called System Data. It may be tens of gigabytes. The frustrating part is that System Data is not one simple folder: it can include caches, logs, temporary files, app support files, local backups, old update files, device backups and other files managed by macOS or applications. That does not mean all of it is junk. Randomly deleting system folders can break apps or macOS. This tutorial helps you decide what to investigate first.

Safety first

DO NOT MANUALLY DELETE RANDOM SYSTEM FOLDERS. AI must never tell you to blindly delete /System, /Library, hidden system folders, unknown files in ~/Library, caches it cannot identify, Time Machine or local snapshot data without explaining the consequences, or app support folders without knowing what created them. System Data is a category label, not a single thing: a large System Data number may include data that macOS or apps still need. CHECK FIRST. DELETE LATER ONLY IF CONFIDENT.

Steps

1. Take a screenshot of the storage screen showing System Data, Applications, Documents, Photos and available/free space.
2. Attach the screenshot to ChatGPT or Claude.
3. Paste the supplied prompt.
4. Work through only the SAFE FIRST CHECKS section. The goal is to identify likely causes. For example, a screen showing System Data — 82 GB, Applications — 34 GB, Documents — 18 GB and Available — 7 GB might produce checks such as old iPhone/iPad backups, large app caches that can be identified safely, old downloaded installers, large application support data from apps you recognise, and local backup/snapshot usage that needs further inspection. Do not present this as guaranteed — AI should adapt to what you actually show it. Do not start deleting system files because AI mentions them.

What success looks like

Before: you see a large System Data category and feel tempted to delete random folders. After: you have a short investigation list, such as check old device backups, check large apps and their support data, check old installers/downloads, check whether backups/snapshots may be involved, and leave unknown system folders alone. System Data can change over time: macOS may temporarily count caches, update files, backups, indexes and other files in this category, and a large number does not always mean something is broken. It can shrink after normal cleanup, restarting, updates finishing or backup processes completing, though restarting is not a guaranteed fix. Important: you understand what deserves investigation first, and nothing important has been deleted.
