Compare Two Documents With AI and Find What Changed

Upload an old and new version of a document and use AI to show the important changes without reading both line by line.

The problem

You receive a new version of a document and need to know what changed. Reading the old and new versions side by side can be slow, and it is easy to miss something important. AI can compare the two files and give you a short list of meaningful differences. Ask it to focus on changes that matter, not just formatting.

What you need

  • The OLD version of the document
  • The NEW version of the document
  • ChatGPT or Claude
  • Word documents, PDFs or text documents only where your chosen AI service can read the uploaded file

Safety first

Documents may contain confidential, legal, financial, employee, customer or other sensitive information. Only upload documents you are authorised to use with your chosen AI service, and do not upload information you are not permitted to share. AI can explain what changed, but it is not a lawyer, accountant or other professional adviser. For contracts or legally important documents, have important changes checked by an appropriately qualified person.

I have attached two versions of the same document. File 1 is the OLD version. File 2 is the NEW version. Please compare them and give me a concise list of meaningful changes. Separate the changes into: 1. Added 2. Removed 3. Changed 4. Dates or deadlines 5. Prices, amounts or fees 6. Obligations or responsibilities Ignore purely cosmetic formatting changes unless they affect the meaning. For each important change: - explain it in plain English; - tell me where it appears using the page, heading or section where possible; - show me why the change matters factually, without giving legal advice. Start with the changes that appear most important. Do not invent changes if the documents are unclear. If part of either document cannot be read reliably, tell me exactly which part you could not compare.

Steps

  1. Find the two document versions. Rename or clearly identify them as OLD and NEW so there is no confusion.
  2. Attach both documents to ChatGPT or Claude. Make sure you tell AI which is the old version and which is the new version.
  3. Paste the supplied prompt and wait for the comparison. For example, if the old document says “Payment is due within 30 days” and the new document says “Payment is due within 14 days”, AI should identify that the payment deadline changed from 30 days to 14 days.
  4. Check the important changes against the actual documents. Pay extra attention to money, dates, deadlines, responsibilities, removed wording and newly added wording. Do not assume every AI comparison is perfect.

What success looks like

Before: you have two long documents and do not know exactly what changed. After: you have a short comparison, such as changed: payment deadline, 30 days to 14 days; added: a new 10% cancellation fee in Section 5; removed: the previous weekend-support wording. Use the AI summary to find changes faster. For anything important, verify the change in the actual document.

If it goes wrong

The comparison is too broad. Please compare the documents one section at a time. Start with: [PASTE SECTION OR HEADING] For this section only, tell me: 1. what was added; 2. what was removed; 3. what changed; 4. any changes to dates, money, deadlines or responsibilities. Do not compare other sections yet.
